March 2011 in Art Class: Ms. Doris

In March students in Kindergarten, First and Second grades are focusing on art history and Women’s History Month. We developed several projects inspired by the work of four women artists.

-Georgia O’Keefe, Agnes Martin, Bridget Riley and Frida Kahlo: Children learned about each artist, their work and their lives. Inspired by the work of each artist students used various materials to make:

Landscape paintings – students learned about landscape painting, foreground and background, distance, the horizon and depicting space. Inspired by Georgia O’Keefe’s paintings students created their own landscapes using watercolor paint.

Abstract painting using tape: Inspired by Agnes Martin’s abstract minimalist paintings, students created paintings on paper using tape to create geometric patterns and learned to dilute paint to create softer colors similar to Martin’s paintings.

Op art drawings: Students studied the Op art paintings of Bridget Riley and created line drawings of their own using the techniques of Op art.

Self Portrait: Students created self-portraits inspired by Frida Kahlo including items that depict spring around them. Students also studied Mexican paper crafts and created “papel picado” Mexican paper cut-outs as well as Mexican paper flowers which we used to decorate the school.

Breaking News: Our art project on DonorsChoose is fully funded! Thank you to all who donated! We look forward to using our new art supplies.

IMPORTANT!! ********* 1st and 2nd Grades: If you have not already done so, please purchase a sketchbook for your child (8.5” x 11” or 9” x 12”) and send in to school with the child's name and class clearly printed on the front cover. These will be kept in the art room for drawing exercises and will be sent home for summer to have the children continue practicing their drawing and bring it back to school in September to share with their class.
