1R - Mrs. Rivera
week of 5/7-5/11
A PEEK AT OUR WEEK!
1R learned about…
Language Arts (Phonics): We have learned that /aw/ has many spellings (aw, au_, augh, ough, al, all). We also learned that /oi/ can be spelled oi and _oy (coins, noise, toy, boy, etc.).
Language Arts (Cont.): We read and listened to “The Little Engine That Could” and “Riddles.” We learned new vocabulary words (dining car, fine, yards, and riddles). We have also been working with singular and plural pronouns. Ask your child to give you examples of pronouns and let them explain why they’re singular or plural.
Spelling: This week we worked with singular and plural words. We also worked on completing a story by filling in the blanks.
Writing: We have all finished editing our short stories and began to work on one story that will be published. We are working on adding details and making our stories longer. We want our stories to have beginning, middle and end paragraphs.
Math: We have been busy working with fractions! We worked on fractional parts of the whole, comparing fractions, and different names for fractional parts. We also explored capacity, symmetry, and heights. We will be having a math test next week.
Science (Mrs. Hashmi): This week in Science we reused milk cartons and turned them into plant pots. We also learned how to plant seeds. This was an exciting project and students used their creativity to make authentic presents for Mother's Day. Next week, we will be having our Unit Review and Assessment on Plants. We hope you enjoyed your gifts and Happy Mother's Day!
Social Studies (Ms. Baca): We continue to work on our Journal Square Project and are almost done sketching on the wall. By next week, all of our sketches will be up and the next step will begin. We are so excited to see how it has progressed. Parents please remember: 1st Grade asks, "Why is Journal Square important to our neighborhood?"
